The Senior Strategy Manager oversees the activities of the junior strategy management team and is responsible for the effective creation and communication of a clear strategic vision for the business. He defines focused tactical and strategic agendas that enhance the business and works closely with the business’s executive leadership at all fronts of the business with a clear emphasis on key strategic initiatives for the business.
The Senior Strategy Manager approves and formulates the business’s long-term strategic plans, analyses, and recommendations in relation to matters such as emerging industry trends, competitive dynamics, expansion opportunities, and business performance enhancement. The Senior Strategy Manager is passionate, results-driven, and focused on consistent business growth and development.
He handles complex issues and gains insight into the strategic issues that are at the forefront of the executive leadership to-do-list.
Objectives and Responsibilities of the Senior Strategy Manager
Strategy Definition: The Senior Strategy Manager leads the junior strategy management team in the development of robust strategies that relate to some of the primary objectives of the business. The Senior Strategy Manager places emphasis on creating strategies that are focused on business model optimization. He designs strategies that fundamentally redesign the businesses operating models that are failing to achieve target returns.
Strategic Planning: The Senior Strategy Manager also creates and drives inspiring and collaborative productivity capabilities for strategy formulation. In this capacity, he leads the strategic sourcing process for the business, inclusive of identifying needs, conducting pre-project planning, defining projects, collecting internal and external data, performing strategic analyses, identifying opportunities, and developing implementation plans.
Strategic Performance Management: The Senior Strategy Manager personally develops approaches that create simple and lean strategic processes for targeted business activities and drive the greatest value to the business. He also applies consistent and ambitious strategic principles in order to ensure that business processes and decision making processes and structures are much simpler and balanced. This will ensure performance enhancement across the business.
Strategic Risk Management: It is also the duty of the Senior Strategy Manager to anticipate risk scenarios, develop suitable risk management strategies, and establish mitigation measures in the event that such scenarios should occur. The Senior Strategy Manager establishes the business’s KPIs that facilitate the analysis/measurement of the business’s performance against overall goals, objectives, targets, and budgets.
Strategy Coach: The Senior Strategy Manager leads the business’s leadership and management at all fronts through strategy development and the achievement of sustainable efficiencies. This is inclusive of productivity improvements, improved resource allocation, resource productivity, strengthening of risk controls, and improved consumer experience.
The Senior Strategy Manager guides the business’s leadership through complex issues and business re-engineering efforts in order to drive large and complex projects and initiatives and also enable performance improvement across the business. In this capacity, the Senior Strategy Manager also oversees the training and development of the business’s junior strategy management teams, constantly improving their skills for optimal departmental performance.
Collaboration/Relationship Management: The Senior Strategy Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in order to support the sourcing process. The Senior Strategy Manager coordinates with the relevant stakeholders in order to ensure the timely implementation of suitable sourcing strategies.
The Senior Strategy Manager, as mentioned, also works with leadership and management across the business on projects as required in an effort to guarantee the best approaches in the execution of various projects and business initiatives, leading to enhanced performance and achievement of desired results.
Analytics: The Senior Strategy Manager is also tasked with benchmarking industry best practices and promoting their adoption within the business as applicable. In this capacity, he evaluates and monitors market conditions on a regular basis and adjusts business strategies to suit the shifting conditions.
He will also conduct business performance and competitive analyses and generate reports and recommendations for relevant leadership/management as well as the business’s executives and stakeholders.
Other Duties: The Senior Strategy Manager performs similar duties as he deems fit for the proper execution of his duties and duties as assigned by the Head of Corporate Strategy, Director, Corporate Strategy, the Chief Business Development Officer, or the Employer.
Required Qualifications of the Senior Strategy Manager
Education: The Senior Strategy Manager is required to have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in Business Administration, Industrial Management Finance, Economics, or any other related business field. An equivalent of the same in practical experience is also acceptable for the position.
Experience: A candidate for this position must have had at least 5 years of working experience in a strategy manager position within a fast-paced and dynamic business environment, preferably working as a strategy manager. The candidate will also be a proven change-agent and demonstrate experience in driving transformations, fostering collaboration strategy formulations, and resolving performance issues.
The candidate will also have an ability to promptly grasp and assimilate information throughout multiple business fronts and influence rapid fact-based decision-making. A suitable candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to lead a strategy management team and business leadership through complex transformations and resolve significant business conflicts.
Communication Skills: The Senior Strategy Manager will also have outstanding communication skills that will be necessary for facilitating clear lines of communication with business leadership, management, and stakeholders, which will be significant in determining the effectiveness with which important strategic approaches are applied across the business.
The Senior Strategy Manager will also need exceptional communication skills in his supervisory duties over the junior strategy management team, which will similarly determine their effectiveness and improvement in their performance. Communication skills will be demanded by this position when drafting regular analyses reports for the business’s leadership, executives, stakeholders, and senior strategy management.
These reports play a central role in the decision-making process across the business and therefore, must be clear, easy-to-understand, unambiguous, engaging, and convincing, which demand good communication skills from the Senior Strategy Manager.
Ms Office: A candidate for this position must demonstrate proficiency in the use of Ms Word, Ms Excel, and PowerPoint, which are all necessary for the creation of both visually and verbally engaging analyses reports and presentations, for the business’s leadership, executives, relevant stakeholders, and senior strategy management.
Analytical Skills: The Senior Strategy Manager must demonstrate financial analysis capabilities, as well as an ability to apply quantitative and qualitative analyses to solve problems within the business. He will be able to gather internal and external data that he will promptly translate into useful and actionable insights for informed-strategy formulation.
He will also be capable of carrying out performance, market, and competitive analyses of the business. The Senior Strategy Manager will play a leading role in the establishment of a culture of analytical inquisitiveness and creative data-driven problem solving across the business.

He will also be comfortable working in a group/collaborative setting, be comfortable working with senior business leadership and executives, have an ability to work on multiple simultaneous projects and meet tight deadlines without compromising quality, and have an ability to remain calm and compose in times of uncertainty and stress.
People Skills: The Senior Strategy Manager will also need to possess strong people skills that will allow him to form strong and lasting connections with others. He will demonstrate an ability to influence senior business leadership and executives and an ability to inspire and drive a cross-functional team in a unified direction.
