In 2005, four friends founded a company called Refinery29, and launched a fashion blog, publishing just one story a week. With time, frequency increased and content expanded to include other lifestyle and retail topics. However, the organization of the site suffered. So in 2013 R29 commissioned an award-winning redesign of the site.
The founders’ roots go deep in fashion and beauty. But the company has gone beyond this to create a unique identity – one that mixes aspirational products, a tongue-in-cheek tone, and snippets of news for savvy young professional women. By 2014, visitors to the R29 site were spending the equivalent of more than 150,000 days (411 years) reading stories ranging from runway trends and beauty tips to dating disaster stories, news and politics. In that year, Fast Company named R29 as Number Two among the World’s Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Style.
R29 now employs nearly 400 dedicated staff. Together, they keep abreast of what’s new in the world of lifestyle for women and use digital media to share this information globally. The company remains headquartered in New York, but has branched out to include offices in Los Angeles and London.
Today, Refinery 29 publishes over 2000 stories per month, with features, contributors, and ideas spanning the world. It commands an audience of 27 million unique visitors monthly and has a global reach of 225 million across all platforms. The company’s goal for the future is to make Refinery29 the number-one destination for women who crave thought-provoking conversation around limitless ideas.
